Astre scores career-high 22 points, Walker posts 12th career double-double as Thunderwolves split weekend in New Rochelle

SUNY Niagara won its fourth contest in its last five outings in a tight 69-61 win over Montgomery College (MD) Sunday at Monroe University in New Rochelle. This was the second and final day of the 2026 Monroe MLK Mixer, which also featured the host Mustangs and Monroe Community College.

With a five-point lead at halftime (29-24), SUNY Niagara outscored the Raptors, 21-4, in the third quarter for a 50-28 lead. Montgomery College clawed its way back to cut the deficit to 67-58 with 54 seconds remaining in the game before Anna Astre, who scored a career-high 22 points, converted a lay-up with 28 ticks left, and put SUNY Niagara’s lead to nine (69-58).

Along with the career scoring day, Astre shot 9-of-17 of the field and went a game-best 3-of-8 from the 3-point line. The freshman also had a game-high five steals plus four rebounds.

Sophomore Atarah Walker recorded her 12th career double-double (fourth of season) behind a stat-line of 14 points and 14 rebounds. The sophomore and Niagara Falls native shot 7-of-13 from the field. 

Azriel Hall scored 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting and recorded her 18th consecutive game in double-digit scoring. The Lockport native is averaging a team-high 18.5 points per game and is tied for 23rd among all NJCAA Division II players.

After posting just one assist in an 88-55 loss versus Monroe University Saturday, Isabella Karabetsos recorded a game-high seven assists and scored 11 points on 5-of-11 shooting. Karabetsos also had one steal in her 50th career game with SUNY Niagara.  

Shania Beylo scored four of SUNY Niagara’s nine points off the bench and had three assists and three steals. Allison Milleville had three points and four rebounds in 25 minutes off the bench and Alana Rivers and Adrianna Kennedy scored one free-throw apiece.

SUNY Niagara shot 29-of-71 (40.8 from the field), 7-of-28 (25%) from beyond the arc and 4-of-10 (40%) from the free-throw line. The blue-and-gold scored 42 points in the paint, 29 points off turnovers and 14 on second-chance opportunities, tallied 14 assists and 16 steals.  

SUNY Niagara is now 11-7 this season and has won six of its last nine contests since a 90-30 win over Villa Maria College on Nov. 23 in Sanborn. The Thunderwolves recorded their 10th win of the season — the 13th time in the last 14 seasons (since 2012-13) — in an 84-56 win at Lakeland CC on Jan. 12. 

 

NOTES:

  • In her 11th start this season, Astre scored a career-high 22 points and surpassed her 19-point performance in SUNY Niagara’s 100-45 win at Lorain County CC on Dec. 20. This was Astre’s ninth double-digit scoring game and the seventh in her last 10 appearances. Astre is averaging 11.3 points and 4.8 rebounds a contest and is shooting 42.2% from the field in 20.1 minutes per game. 

 

  • Walker recorded her 12th career double-double in her 46th game as a Thunderwolf following her 14-point, 14-rebound game against the Raptors. Walker has recorded 388 points (8.4 per game) and 407 rebounds (8.8 per game) in her career. This season, Walker is currently ranked tied 69th in rebounds per game (8.9) among all NJCAA Division II players this season.

  • In her 50th career game with the Thunderwolves, Karabetsos recorded at least five assists in a contest for the 31st time and the 11th time this season in her sophomore campaign. This was also the 26th time overall and 10th this season when Karabetsos reached double-digit scoring. Karabetsos has now recorded 529 points and 294 assists in her SUNY Niagara career.

 

  • Now with 103, Karabetsos is one of seven players in NJCAA Division II with at least 100 assists this season. Pima CC’s Melicia Nelson leads with 133. SUNY Niagara is 8-3 this season and 27-4 in her career when Karabetsos recorded at least five assists in a game. 

 

  • Sunday also marked Ava Bull’s 50th career appearance with SUNY Niagara. Bull was held scoreless against the Raptors but crossed the 400-point mark with her four-point performance versus Monroe University Saturday (401 in career). The Burlington, Ontario native posted one rebound against the Raptors Sunday and now has 397 in her career.  This season, Bull is averaging 7.6 points and rebounds in 24.4 minutes per contest. 

 

  • Along with reaching double-digits in points for an 18th straight game, Hall recorded her sixth game this season with at least two converted 3-pointers. Hall’s single-game high is three, which she converted against both Garrett College (84-61 win on Nov. 8) and at Lakeland CC (84-56 win on Jan. 12). Hall has recorded 333 points and 94 rebounds in 28.6 minutes per contest.

 

  • In 18 minutes off the bench, Beylo recorded her seventh game with at least three assists this season. Beylo’s single-game high is four, which came against both Allegany College of Maryland (92-41 win on Nov. 9) and at Lakeland CC (84-56 win on Jan. 12).  

 

  • SUNY Niagara is now 2-6 when it doesn’t record 15 assists in a game. Its other victory came when it posted a season-low five against at St. Clair CC (63-59 on Nov. 13). The Thunderwolves are 9-1 when they tally at least 15 total.  

 

  • After shooting 40.8% against the Raptors, SUNY Niagara has shot at least 40% in a game 10 times this season and a fourth time in its last five games. This was also the ninth time the Thunderwolves converted at least 7 3-pointers in a game, including their season-high of 14 against Lackawanna College (112-48 on Nov. 1).

 

SUNY Niagara continues its season when it faces Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC) Essex at 2 p.m. Jan. 24 in Maryland.
