Thunderwolves split with Mohawk Valley on Sophomore Day

In front of family and friends, SUNY Niagara held its Sophomore Day and split with Mohawk Valley Community College Saturday in Sanborn. The Thunderwolves recorded a 4-1 seven-inning win in Game One and a 10-2 five-inning loss in Game Two against the Hawks. Mia Herman (Barker), Caitlyn Hanley (West Seneca West), Lauren Kisloski (Tonawanda), Quinn Manth (North Tonawanda), Jordan Shaffer (North Tonawanda) and Sidney Ziemendorf (Wilson) were honored in a ceremony before the contests.

SUNY Niagara is now 13-17 and 11-9 in NJCAA Region III action. This is the Thunderwolves’ first 10-win season since 2023 and the fourth this decade (11 in 2021, 31 in 2022, 26 in 2023).

Weather permitting, SUNY Niagara concludes its regular season with a doubleheader versus Genesee Community College at 10 a.m. Sunday in Sanborn. The Thunderwolves have won five of the last six meetings with the Cougars since 2023.

Game One: SUNY Niagara 4, Mohawk Valley Community College 1, Final, 7 Innings

A one-run single from Miranda Shingleton and a RBI walk from Molly Syposs gave SUNY Niagara a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third. The Hawks cut the deficit in half in the top of the sixth, but the Thunderwolves scored twice in the bottom of the frame off an error and a fielder's choice groundout by Caitlyn Hanley. Miranda Shingleton (RBI, two runs, stolen base) and Lauren Kisloski recorded two hits each.

Quinn Manth went 1-for-3 at the plate and scored twice. She also recorded her 40th stolen base of the season and the 81st of her career in her 59th career game, extending her new record in the program's modern era (since 2013).

Syposs and Emmilie Sypherd (RBI) each had a hit and Mia Herman had a stolen base.

Hanley also recorded her 10th career win (seventh this season) as she threw all seven innings and allowed one run on three hits, struck out three and walked three on 101 pitches (60 strikes). Hanley now has a 10-18 career record in 29 starts and 38 appearances, including her outing in Game Two of this doubleheader.

Game Two: Mohawk Valley Community College 10, SUNY Niagara 2, Final, 5 Innings

The Hawks had a 3-0 lead in the first and added seven more in the third for a 10-1 advantage.

Quinn Manth recorded a sacrifice fly and brought home Marissa Shingleton in the top of the third (3-1 Mohawk Valley). Jordan Shaffer then recorded a one-run double and delivered Mia Herman home in the top of the fifth (10-2 Mohawk Valley).

Shaffer went 2-for-2 at the plate along with the RBI. This was her eighth career multi-hit game (six last season).

Along with scoring one run each, Herman and Marissa Shingleton both recorded a hit.
