Thunderwolves drop second straight in 23-point defeat against host Monroe at MLK Mixer
Despite a team-high 14 points on 5-of-14 shooting from Chioke Marshall, SUNY Niagara lost to Monroe University, 82-59, Saturday in New Rochelle. This was the first day of the 2026 Monroe MLK Mixer, which also featured Montgomery College and Monroe Community College.
The Thunderwolves trailed the Mustangs 36-27 at halftime and were outscored 45-33 in the second half. Monroe University. The Mustangs had a 17-point lead (30-13) with 4 minutes, 5 seconds remaining in the first half and a 25-point advantage (82-57) with 40 seconds left in the game.
Along with leading SUNY Niagara in scoring, Marshall also had seven rebounds. This marked Marshall’s 13th game in double-digit scoring this season (41st overall). Marshall is 15th among all NJCAA Division II players with 22.2 points per game and has scored 915 points in 47 career games.
Bryce Wejuli recorded eight points on 4-of-11 shooting, a game-high 10 rebounds and a team-high two blocks. Jimmie Green had seven points, a team-high four assists and two rebounds.
Jaedon Hutchinson had seven points and seven rebounds. Jack Kempf had six points and seven rebounds.
Jacob Humphrey had five points, four rebounds and three assists. Mustafa Eskici had five points, Abu Dukuray had four points and David Washington added three points.
SUNY Niagara shot 22-of-60 (36.7%) from the field, 4-of-19 (21.1%) from the 3-point line and 11-of-16 (68.8%) from the free-throw line. The Thunderwolves out-rebounded the Mustangs, 43-37, but only finished with eight assists, their second straight game in single-digits and third this season.
NOTES:
- SUNY Niagara is 1-6 all-time against Monroe University since the series began on Feb. 4, 2017. The Thunderwolves last defeated the Mustangs in an 83-76 finish on Jan. 20, 2018 in New Rochelle.
- Wejuli recorded his 12th game of the season with at least five rebounds and his seventh in a row since SUNY Niagara’s 89-79 win versus Henry Ford College on Dec. 13. This was also the freshman’s second 10-rebound game of his career and his first since the Thunderwolves’ season-opening 100-68 win against Lackawanna College on Nov. 1. Wejuli is second on the Thunderwolves in rebound (5.6) and third in points (10.9) per game.
- Hutchinson finished with seven rebounds, his 14th game with at least five this season. The freshman is averaging a team-best 7.1 rebounds per game plus 9.1 points and has appeared in all 17 games.
- In what was his 41st career game (27 in the 2023-24 season), Green matched his career-high of four assists in consecutive appearances (Lorain County CC on Dec. 20). Green is averaging 5.1 points and 4 rebounds per game this season.
- Kempf’s seven rebounds marked the eighth time he had at least five in a game. The freshman is fourth on the team in rebounds per game (4.5).
- SUNY Niagara is 1-4 when it records 10 assists or fewer in a game this season, compared to a 9-3 mark when the team accomplishes the feat (5-1 with 15 or greater). The Thunderwolves posted a season-high 23 assists in a 97-80 win at Lorain County CC on Dec. 20.
- SUNY Niagara is now 6-1 in games decided by 10 points or more this season. This is compared to a 4-6 record when games are decided by 10 points or less.
SUNY Niagara continues its season when it faces Montgomery College at 1 p.m. Sunday in the second and final day of the Monroe MLK Mixer in New Rochelle.
