Thunderwolves defeat Monroe CC on “Blackout Night,” Beilein records win No. 350 in overtime thriller Wednesday
SUNY Niagara once again became the “Cardiac Kids” Wednesday night in Sanborn.
Led by a career-high 33 points from freshman Jacob Humphrey and a 28-point performance from the program’s latest 1,000-point scorer, sophomore Chioke Marshall, SUNY Niagara defeated Monroe CC, 101-96 in overtime. This marked the Thunderwolves’ third consecutive win along with a 3-0 slate in WNYAC play.
The victory against Monroe marked the 350th win for head coach Bill Beilein, who is now in his 17th season with the program. A full breakdown of how Beilein got to his latest milestone is at the bottom of this recap.
Humphrey finished the game 10-of-18 from the field and went a game-best 12-of-16 from the free-throw line for his 33-point outing. The Bishop Timon product also had five rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Marshall added 28 points on 9-of-18 shooting and converted nine of his 10 free-throw attempts. Marshall also had four rebounds, one assist and one steal. This performance came after he scored a career-high 50 points in SUNY Niagara’s 110-109 overtime win at Jamestown CC Jan. 28, which made him the program’s 13th 1,000-point career scorer.
Bryce Wejuli recorded 14 points, four rebounds and a season-high two blocks. Jaedon Hutchinson had 13 points and a team-high six rebounds.
D’Andre Gibbs rounded out the starting lineup and recorded four points, five rebounds and two assists in 19 minutes of action.
Starpoint graduate Jack Kempf recorded five of SUNY Niagara’s nine points off the bench and had three rebounds and two blocks in 10 minutes of play.
Abu Dukuray had three points and Ateny Kuol had one point and two assists.
SUNY Niagara shot 34-of-62 (54.8%) from the field, 5-of-13 (38.5%) from the 3-point line and 28-of-39 (71.8%) at the free-throw line. The Thunderwolves recorded 11 assists and four steals.
SUNY Niagara is 13-8 (3-0 WNYAC) this season and has won eight of its last 12 contests since Dec. 3.
NOTES:
- SUNY Niagara is now 2-1 in overtime contests this season, including its 80-74 loss at Lakeland CC on Jan. 12 and its 110-109 overtime win at Jamestown CC on Jan. 28. The 2025-26 campaign is the first time the Thunderwolves have played multiple overtime games in a season since a 4-0 finish in 2016-17. SUNY Niagara is now 8-3 in overtime games over the last 10 seasons (since 2016-17).
- SUNY Niagara is now 6-7 in single-digit contests and 7-1 when it is decided by 10 points or more.
- Humphrey broke his previous scoring high of 26 points, which he recorded in SUNY Niagara’s 80-74 overtime loss against Lakeland CC on Jan. 12. Wednesday against Monroe CC was also Humphrey’s 11th double-digit scoring game of the season and his fifth in his last six outings.
- With his 28-point outing, Marshall recorded his 17th game in double-digit scoring this season (45th career) and he is now fifth among all NJCAA Division II players with 24.5 points per game.
- In 51 career games, Marshall has now scored 1,048 career points (20.5 per game). After entering the Monroe game with 1,020 career points, Marshall passed Joe Charles (1,026 from 1970-72) and Al Schug (1,029 from 1964-66) and is now ninth all-time in SUNY Niagara men’s basketball scoring. 1975 graduate George Pendelton is the all-time leading scorer with 1,245 points.
- Marshall is also one of seven SUNY Niagara players with at least 100 made 3-pointers in his career over the last 10 seasons (since 2016-17) with 101. 2018 graduate Donel Cathcart holds the record in these 10 seasons with 144.
- Wejuli recorded his 10th game in double-digit scoring with his 14-point effort. The two blocks marked his fifth multi-block game of the season (season-high of three against Lackawanna College on Nov. 1).
- After posting his 100th rebound of the season during SUNY Niagara’s road win against Erie CC on Jan. 24, Jaedon Hutchinson recorded his 16th game with at least five rebounds. Hutchinson is averaging a team-best 6.7 rebounds plus 9.5 points per game and is the only Thunderwolf to start in all 21 games.
- With the 11 assists, SUNY Niagara is now 12-4 when they post at least 10 in a game. The Thunderwolves are 5-2 when they have 15 or more.
- SUNY Niagara is 10-5 when it converts at least 15 free-throws in a game and 6-0 when it completes 20. The Thunderwolves’ season-high is 31 on 46 attempts in a 98-94 win versus Garrett College on Nov. 8.

How Bill Beilein got to 350
SUNY Niagara head coach Bill Beilein recorded his 350th win in the 101-96 overtime finish against Monroe CC Wednesday. The Appleton native was already SUNY Niagara’s all-time wins leader after passing Dan Bazzani’s total of 197 during the 2018-19 season.
In his tenure with the Thunderwolves, Beilein has reached the NJCAA Region III Div. II Final Four on 14 occasions with five regional championships (2016-17, 2020-21, 2021-22, 2022-23, 2024-25) and has received Coach of the Year honors seven times.
The Thunderwolves have also advanced to the NJCAA Div. II national tournament five times (2016-17, 2018-19, 2021-22, 2022-23, 2024-25) under Beilein, who has developed seven NJCAA All-Americans and five 1,000-point career scorers (Chioke Marshall, Lamar Lovelace, Donel Cathcart, Eli Jones & Robby Seyler).
