T'Wolves fall to Lakeland in overtime to start second half stretch

In its first contest after a 23-day break, SUNY Niagara went to an extra frame but lost to Lakeland CC, 80-74, in overtime, Monday in Ohio. The Thunderwolves trailed 43-40 at halftime but outscored the Lakers, 31-28, in the second half for a 71-71 score at the end of regulation. 

The Lakers then outscored the blue-and-gold, 9-3, in the overtime frame and secured the win. SUNY Niagara is 10-6 on the season and has won five of its last seven since Dec. 3.

Jacob Humphrey tied his career-high of 24 points, his seventh double-figure contest in his first nine career games, and shot 8-of-10 from the field and 3-of-5 from the 3-point line. Humphrey also tied with Bryce Wejuli and Jaedon Hutchinson for the team high of seven rebounds and had a team-high four assists.

Hutchinson also had 16 points in the loss. This was his highest scoring output since he recorded 14 in a 117-58 win versus Corning CC on Dec. 3, the last of a four-game stretch in double-digit scoring.

Abu Dukuray scored 13 of SUNY Niagara’s 20 points off the bench. Wejuli had eight points and D’Andre Gibbs scored five off the bench. Jack Kempf added a basket.

SUNY Niagara shot 24-of-48 (50%) from the field, 8-of-21 (38.1%) from beyond the arc and 16-of-25 (64%) from the free-throw line. The Thunderwolves out-rebounded the Lakers, 34-32, but tied their season-low of seven assists (at CCBC Dundalk on Nov. 16). 

NOTES:

 

  • Monday’s contest against Lakeland CC marked SUNY Niagara’s first overtime contest since its 78-72 win versus CCBC Catonsville on Dec. 10, 2023, the second and final day of the Thunderwolves Holiday Classic. Jamyier Patton scored a team-high 15 points in 21 minutes off the bench and Jalen Duff added 13. 

 

  • This was the Thunderwolves’ first overtime loss since a 93-87 defeat at Erie CC on Feb. 5, 2020. Including Monday’s contest, SUNY Niagara is 5-2 in overtime games over the last 10 seasons (2016-17 season). 

 

  • SUNY Niagara is 4-6 in games decided by 10 points or less this season and 6-0 in contests with greater than a 10-point margin. 

 

  • With the 24 points, Humphrey has reached double-figure scoring in seven of his first nine outings with SUNY Niagara. The freshman guard tied his career-best of 24 points, which he posted versus Corning CC on Dec. 3. Humphrey is second in points per game (15.7) along with 2.8 assists per contest and is shooting 57.3% from the field.

 

  • Wejuli recorded his 11th game of the season with at least five rebounds and his sixth in a row since SUNY Niagara’s 89-79 win versus Henry Ford College on Dec. 13. The freshman’s season-high in the category remains 10, which he posted in the Thunderwolves’ season-opening 100-68 win against Lackawanna College on Nov. 1.Wejuli is second on the Thunderwolves in rebound (6.3) and third in points (11.1) per game.

 

  • After recording a season-high 23 in a 97-80 win at Lorain County CC on Dec. 20 — its last game before Monday — SUNY Niagara tied its season low of seven assists. SUNY Niagara is 1-3 when it records 10 assists or fewer in a game this season, compared to a 9-3 mark when the team accomplishes the feat (5-1 with 15 or greater).

 

  • The win against Lorain County CC on Dec. 20 marked the 17th consecutive season where the Thunderwolves have recorded at least 10 wins in the Bill Beilein era (2009 — present). The Thunderwolves (then Trailblazers) were 14-35 in the three seasons before Beilein’s arrival (2006-07 to 2008-09).

 


SUNY Niagara resumes its season at the MLK Mixer Saturday and Sunday at Monroe University in New Rochelle. The Thunderwolves face the host Mustangs at 7 p.m. Sunday and Montgomery College at 1 p.m. Sunday.
