Thunderwolves sweep Corning on Sophomore Day Sunday, finish regular season 46-5

In front of family and friends, SUNY Niagara honored its 18-man Class of 2026 and completed its regular season with a pair of wins against Corning Community College Sunday at Sal Maglie Stadium. The Thunderwolves picked up a 16-0 five-inning victory in Game One and a 10-0 six-inning win in Game Two. 

Ranking second in the current NJCAA Div. III national ranking, SUNY Niagara finished 46-5 in the regular season and won its ninth consecutive NJCAA Region III West banner (since 2017) at 26-2. The Thunderwolves are also 34-0 when they score at least 10 runs in a contest and 399-78 (.836) overall in the last 10 seasons since 2017. 

Following Sunday's results, SUNY Niagara is 48-2 at Sal Maglie Stadium dating back to the 2024 season. 

In between the two games, SUNY Niagara honored its sophomore class and families with an on-field ceremony. Austin Barton, Keegan Bazinet, Charlie Chubak, Joe Czaja, Luke Gigliotti, Cam Gravelle, Liam Hadfield, Dalton Harper, Matt Kasprowicz, Evan Kohr, Bryce Mashanic, Mike Munzert, Joe Panzarella, Cooper Polcovich, Cooper Prizel, Cooper Rossano, Mike Schaefer and Jackson Sheehy were honored.

SUNY Niagara now prepares for the NJCAA Region III Div. II sub-regionals. More information will be announced later this week. 

 

Game One: SUNY Niagara 16, Corning Community College, Final, 5 Innings

 

SUNY Niagara scored five runs in the bottom of the second and later scored 10 in the bottom of the fourth in the front half of the doubleheader.  

Sophomore and Albany commit Mike Munzert recorded the win in four innings of work. Munzert allowed no runs on two hits, struck out five and walked two on 76 pitches (46 strikes).

Classmate and Mansfield commit Austin Barton threw in the fifth and retired the side with three strikeouts (16 pitches, 9 strikes).

St. John Fisher commit Cooper Prizel and Southern Indiana commit Mike Schaefer drove in four runs each. Prizel had two hits and scored twice and Schaefer had one hit and scored once.

Dalton Harper went 3-for-4 and drove in one run. Jacob Hudson had two hits and drove in three runs. 

Luke Gilgiotti (RBI, two runs) and Cam Gravelle (two runs) both had two hits. Evan Kohr (three stolen bases) and Derrick Allen (RBI) had one hit each and Cooper Rossano crossed home plate twice.

 

 

Game Two: SUNY Niagara 10, Corning Community College 0, Final, 6 Innings

 

The contest was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when SUNY Niagara scored four runs. The Thunderwolves later scored one in the fifth and then the final five in the sixth for the 10-run mercy rule. 

On the mound, sophomore Matt Kasprowicz recorded a one-hitter and a career-high 10 strikeouts on only 57 pitches (44 strikes). This is the seventh time a Thunderwolf starter has posted double-digit strikeouts in an outing this season (Derrick Allen 3; Keegan Bazinet 2; Liam Hadfield 1).  

Cooper Rossano recorded two hits and recorded his 100th career RBI. Rossano, a Lenoir-Rhyne commit, is now the fifth player in the program's modern era (since 2007) to drive in 100 career runs, joining 2013 graduate Dylan Baun, 2025 graduate Gavyn Boyle and classmates Dalton Harper and Mike Schaefer. 

Harper and Schaefer both drove in a run and had two hits. Derrick Allen (two runs scored) and Luke Gigliotti also had two hits and 2 RBI each in the win. 

Evan Kohr had a hit, an RBI, three stolen bases and scored three times. Cooper Prizel drove in a run on his hit and scored once. 

Jacob Hudson and Alexander Graham had one hit each and Cam Gravelle had one RBI.
