Niagara Falls native Matt Clingersmith, NCCC's Recruitment Coordinator, has turned the Thunderwolves into one of the elite NJCAA Div. III baseball programs in the country over the past 10 seasons.
Clingersmith has lead NCCC to its only four NJCAA Div. III World Series appearances, finishing 7th (2009), 2nd (2012), 5th (2013) and 4th (2016). Those teams were all crowned Region III champions as well. He's had two other teams finish as Region III runners-up (2008 and 2011) and several teams ranked in the top 10 nationally, including his 2011 team, which was ranked No. 2 for six weeks. Clingersmith himself has been honored as Region III Coach of the Year on five seperate occasions (2008, 2009, 2012, 2013 and 2016).
Clingersmith has coached three MLB draft picks (Sean Jamieson - 16th Round - Oakland Athletics; Christian Barczykowski - 27th Round - Atlanta Braves; Christian Lindsay-Young - 23rd Round - Oakland Athletics), five NJCAA Div. III All-Americans (Matt Whidden, 2010; Calvin Sluberski, 2012; Chirs Beer, 2014; Michael Colosi & Matt Matre, 2016), four Rawlings Gold Glove winners (Sean Jamieson, 2009; Calvin Sluberski, 2012; Chris Beer, 2014; Michael Colosi, 2016) three Academic All-Americans (Devon Carlson, 2009; Sean Jamieson, 2009; Pat Quinn, 2014), NJCAA Defensive Player of the Year (Michael Colosi, 2016) and SUNY Chancellor's Award winner (Chris Sharkey, 2013). Clingersmith has also produced 19 first team All-Region III selections, 19 first team All-Western New York Athletic Conference picks and six NJCAA World Series All-Tournament choices.
Clingersmith has also done a tremendous job sending players on to four-year colleges and universities. During the last nine years, over 100 players have moved on to NCAA D-I or D-II colleges or universities. Clingersmith's teams have also been recognized several times for holding the highest cumulative GPA among NCCC's intercollegiate athletic teams.
Following a standout career at Niagara Catholic, which included first team All-Western New York honors, Clingersmith moved on to Erie Community College. He helped the Kats to a Region III runner-up finish during his freshman campaign and then led them to a Region III title and a berth in the NJCAA World Series as a sophomore. The lanky right-hander then earned a scholarship to NCAA D-I Canisius College and pitched two years for the Golden Griffins. Upon graduation, Clingersmith spent two years as an assistant on Mike McRae's staff at Canisius.
Clingersmith holds an associate's degree in liberal arts and sciences from Erie CC and a bachelor's of science in physical education from Canisius College. He is currently working towards a master's degree in sport administration. He also continues to play competitively, leading his MUNY teams to four consecutive World Series appearances and championships in 2011 and 2015.
